NIE and TIE in Malaga and Marbella: your foreigner number and card

To buy a home, accept an inheritance, open a bank account or pay taxes in Spain you need a foreigner identity number (NIE). If you are also going to live here, you need a foreigner identity card (TIE). They are two different things and people often mix them up.

We handle both for clients across Spain and abroad, in English, Spanish, Russian and Romanian.

The NIE: your number

The NIE is a personal, unique and permanent number that identifies you to the Spanish authorities (article 4 of Organic Law 4/2000). It does not give you the right to live or work in Spain: it only identifies you.

When you need it

  • Buying or selling property.
  • Accepting an inheritance.
  • Setting up a company or acting as a director.
  • Opening a bank account or any transaction with tax implications.

How to apply

If you are in Spain, you apply at the National Police using form EX-15. If you are abroad, you can apply at the Spanish consulate in your country. We handle the whole process, appointment included, and check that your number is issued without errors.

The TIE: your card

The TIE proves that you hold a permit to stay for more than six months or to reside in Spain. It is issued after your permit is approved, when you give your fingerprints at the National Police with form EX-17.

Since October 2026, in Malaga and other provinces, approvals of first residence or stay permits and of renewals come with an automatic appointment: the Police set the date and time and send them by text message or email. If nothing arrives within 20 days of the approval notice, it is booked through the standard system.

Renewal, loss and changes

Your TIE is renewed when your permit is renewed or modified. If it is lost or stolen, or your details change (address, marital status, passport), you must request a duplicate or report the change.

British residents under the Withdrawal Agreement

If you are British and were already living in Spain before 1 January 2021, your document is the Withdrawal Agreement TIE. We help you and your family members renew it.

FAQ

Does the NIE expire?

No. The number is yours for life. Some banks and notaries simply ask for a recent certificate.

Can I work with an NIE?

No. The NIE does not allow you to work or live in Spain; for that you need an immigration permit.

Does an EU citizen need a TIE?

No. EU citizens register with the Central Register of Foreigners and receive a registration certificate with their NIE. Their non-EU family members do receive a card.
